Jan Barboglio's Camay Nacimiento is a large, fine heirloom-style piece that features a simple, nearly unadorned setup with interesting takes on the classic ideas of the classic manger-and-stable Christmas setup. The manger - made out of patina iron wire - looks fierce and nest-like, and is suggestive of Christ's crown of thorns; the rough-hewn roof is open to the elements and light; Barboglio's Mary and Joseph look like rough hammered-and-filed versions of the typical classic images. In essence, this is a rough but classical piece, suggestive of mortality even as it's a piece about birth - in essence, it's a quintessential Old World Mexico piece. We'd expect nothing less from Jan Barboglio. (Note: the manger, Mary, and Joseph are permanently affixed to the piece, but the baby Jesus is removable.
